Why Protective Equipment is Required | Buy PPE

heavy work glovesThere’s a reason why protective equipment is required by OSHA standards. Personal protective equipment, commonly known as PPE, can help minimize exposure to hazards and helps save lives each and every year. Now, we’re taking a closer look not only at why PPE is important, but how it’s affected workers over the years.

What is Personal Protective Equipment?

Personal protective equipment varies, depending on the type of workplace environment. In some instances, it consists of a hardhat. In others, it consists of a full protective suit and goggles, such as when a worker is around hazardous chemicals. The main purpose of PPE is to help keep a worker from serious workplace injuries and illnesses. These can result from contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards.

Why Use Personal Protective Equipment?

In 2015 alone, 4,836 workers were killed on the job. This means that on average, more than 93 deaths occurred per week. Out of these fatalities, 937 of them were in construction. The leading cause of these were falls. Needless to say, this means that safety equipment such as harnesses, hardhats, and other items are crucial when it comes to staying safe.

In addition, protection equipment is making a difference. Since OSHA and state partners have begun to institute the need for protective equipment, there has been a major difference when it comes to fatalities. Worker deaths are down from about 38 worker deaths a day in 1970 to 13 per day in 2015. In addition, worker injuries and illnesses are down from 10.9 incidents per 100 workers in 1970 to 3 per 100 in 2015.
