More Information about Respiratory Change Schedules

OSHA’s respiratory protection regulations stipulate that employers develop respirator cartridge change schedules based on available data or information. From 1910.134(d)(3)(iii)(B)(2):

If there is no ESLI appropriate for conditions in the employer's workplace, the employer implements a change schedule for canisters and cartridges that is based on objective information or data that will ensure that canisters and cartridges are changed before the end of their service life. The employer shall describe in the respirator program the information and data relied upon and the basis for the canister and cartridge change schedule and the basis for reliance on the data.

Valid Ways to Estimate a Cartridge's Service Life

Conduct Experimental Tests

With this method, data like the names of present contaminants, employee breather rate, and more are used along with field or laboratory tests by qualified professionals to determine the actual service life of cartidges.

Use Manufacturer's Reccomendation

With this method, data like the names of present contaminants, employee breather rate, and more are sent to the manufacturer of the respirator, who then recommends a maximum service life estimate, which should be fairly conservative to prevent harm.

Use a Math Model

With this method, a mathematical equation called the Gerry O. Wood model is used to estimate a working lifespan for respirator cartridges. More information about the Wood model can be found at the OSHA website here
