OSHA Head Protection Requirements

OSHA regulations stipulate that, “employees working in areas where there is a possible danger of head injury from impact, or from falling or flying objects, or from electrical shock and burns, shall be protected by protective helmets.”

Common occupations to which this standard applies include construction workers, mechanics and repairers, carpenters, plumbers, assemblers, sawyers, freight handlers, loggers, stock handlers, wrappers, packers, and more. However, any workplace where employees are at risk of head injury needs to provide head protection in the form of helmets or hard hats.

Hard hats must be fitted to each worker and inspected regularly for cracks, dents, and other damage that indicate the need for replacement.

Hard Hat Types and Classes

Hard hats are generally classified as either Type I or Type II. Type I hard hats are designed to protect wearers from blows directly to the top of the head, as from falling objects. Type II hard hats are designed to protect from off-center blows, like from bumping into a beam or corner.

There are also three classes of hard hats, based on the protection offered from electrical hazards. General, or Class G hard hats are rated for up to 2,200 volts. Electrical, or Class E hard hats, are rated for up to 20,000 volts. Conductive, or Class C, hard hats do not provide electrical protection.

The type of hard hat your workers need will depend on the nature of your workplace.
